Headaches that arrive with deadlines. Blood pressure that spikes before presentations. A stomach that churns through exam season. These are not coincidences — they are the mind-body connection at work. Chronic stress keeps cortisol and adrenaline elevated, and over months that chemistry quietly damages the heart, gut, immunity and sleep.
How stress becomes physical illness
Short bursts of stress are healthy; the body is built for them. Problems begin when the alarm never switches off. Sustained cortisol raises blood sugar and blood pressure, suppresses immune response, tightens muscles into chronic pain and fragments sleep — which in turn worsens anxiety. Our physicians see this loop daily in patients with “unexplained” chest tightness, IBS flares and tension migraines.
What actually works (evidence first)
- Move daily. Thirty minutes of brisk walking lowers cortisol more reliably than any supplement.
- Protect sleep. Same bedtime, cool dark room, no screens for the last hour — boring, and it works.
- Breathe deliberately. Slow diaphragmatic breathing for five minutes measurably drops heart rate and blood pressure.
- Talk early. Two sessions with a counsellor often resolve what months of worry cannot. Our psychiatry OPD runs daily.
When to see a doctor
Seek help if stress brings chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, persistent insomnia or panic attacks — these need medical evaluation first. Carewell’s mind-body clinic pairs physicians with psychologists, so physical causes are ruled out before therapy begins, and therapy is measured against real health markers.
Start with a same-week consultation — in-clinic or by secure video from home.
